KUALA LUMPUR - Around 28 students of Bachelor Degree in Dietetic programs, semester 2 from University Darul Iman Malaysia (UDM) joined the study visitation to Catering and Dietetic department at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) and Serdang Hospital in Sepang last week (10-11 February 2010).

12 persons from Dietetic Programs staff under FPSK also following the visitation as to be instructors. They were includes lecturers, sciences officers, food preparation officer and dietitian officers. Actually it is a first study visiting among Dietetic students which they can bailed more experience and knowledge from there.

Further on, the leader under Department of Catering and Dietetic is Tn Hj Ridzoni bin Sulaiman and it is one of the departments in Hospital Kuala Lumpur that provides two main services, which is the provision of normal and therapeutic diets for in-patients and the provision of clinical dietetic care for patients referred by the doctors. There are two kitchens, with one located in the main block of the hospital and the other at the Institute Pediatrics.

The main block kitchen provide diets for the main block and peripheral ward, including institute of urology & Nephrology, Institute of Oncology & Radiotherapy, Institute of Neurology and National Tuberculosis Center whereas the other kitchen provide diets for Institute Pediatric and Maternity Hospital. Catering service mainly serve for in-patients only. This department serves a large number of normal diet and therapeutic to in-patient. Food will be served base on ward diet order, regulation and patients entitlement. Food also provide for all new admission if diet order receive before 6.15 p.m. Diet for Doctor On-Call and night ration also provide base on their entitlement. They also supply and pack enteral formula for those patients who need, as an oral supplement or for tube feeding. But the Catering and Dietetic department at Serdang Hospital was different because they used the outsourcing catering not in-house catering like in HKL caused the Serdang Hospital is a government-funded multi-specialty hospital located in the district of Sepang in the state of Selangor and between earlier user hospital that used this system (outsourcing) since introduced on 1999. This hospital is located near Putrajaya, the Malaysian federal government administrative centre. The location of the hospital borders the South Kajang Valley Expressway (SKVE) to the east and the medical faculty of Universiti Putra Malaysia to the west. It is clearly seen from the North-South Expressway at the Kajang Interchange and the persons who in charged or leader of Catering and Dietetic department in Serdang Hospital is Pn. Rashidah bt Ambak. Serdang Hospital also provides individual plating or tray for each patients and practiced that when food is cooked they were served as soon as possible to each patients refer to the ward diet order and staff who involved at that time
.

Serdang hospital provides the same diet too whether therapeutic or normal diet to their patients but the food or diet preparation was practical and ready to serve to the patients with plating method while HKL only prepared the food in a large amount and never plating them as individually. So, the objectives from this visitation is to provide an overview of the current challenges in the food service industry at hospital to meet the increasing demands, provides the opportunity of career prospect as a dietitian at any hospital or medical centre and also provide update on the latest developments in technology, design layout, facilities, and equipment for large scale catering to ensure safety and quality of foods. It is also can highlight the scientific findings concerning foods, preparation techniques and food service delivery as well as addressing healthy cooking, modified diets for clients at hospitals and medical centre.

In conclusions, this visitation is very interesting which students got a new idea about dietetic worlds at hospital and they also know the career prospect as a Dietitian in any hospital or medical centre that they will go one day soon.
